Tips for Preparing for IELTS exam

▶️ Knowing the test format

There is two types of IELTS:-

● Academic

● General Training.

Make sure that you prepare for the correct test type as per your requirement.

Academic tests are taken by the students who want to pursue higher education abroad.

General training test is taken by the candidates who want to migrate to another foreign country for work or PR.

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.

The Speaking section, however, can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Listening test

You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions. Recording 1st and 3rd will be a conversation between two, three or four persons whereas 2nd and 4th recording is a monologue.

● Timing is approximately 30 minutes for audio and an extra time of 10 minutes is given as transfer time.

● A variety of question types are used which are multiple-choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, sentence completion etc.

Speaking test

The speaking section assesses the use of spoken English. Every speaking test is recorded in order to recheck or allot bands. The speaking test is conducted in three rounds.

Round 1 - the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies, and interests.

Round 2 - you will be given a cue card that asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes.

Round 3 - you will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2.

Timing is 11–14 minutes

    Writing Test

●  Task 1 - you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarise or explain the information in your own words.

Task 2 - you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style.

Paper format: There are two Writing tasks and Both must be completed.

Timing: 60 minutes

Word limit- task 1 is to be written in 150 words in 20 minutes and task 2 demands 250 words in 40 minutes.

The focus should be on writing quality and not quantity.

Reading test

Paper format: Three reading passages with a variety of questions using a number of task types.

Timing: 60 minutes

No. of questions: 40

Task types: A variety of question types are used, that is, multiple-choice, identifying information, matching information, matching headings, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion,   and short-answer questions.

Sources: Texts are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers, and have been written for a non-specialist audience. All the topics are of general interest.
