Rules of Tenses in English Grammar- Examples & Exercise

Tenses are the concept of the English Language that is used to refer to the time of the action. Users can indicate the time of action that whether it's ongoing or completed. Tenses are of three types present tense, past tense, and future tense.

  • Present tense is used to represent the ongoing action or things happening now.
  • Past tense is used to represent the action that has been taken.
  • Future tense is used to represent the action that is going to happen in near future or after now.

Types of Tenses & Subcategories

As we have already mentioned above there are primarily three types of tenses:

  • Past Tense
  • Present Tense
  • Future Tense

Furthermore, these three categories of tenses are subcategorized on the basis of continuance and completeness of action:

  • Simple/Indefinite Tense
  • Continuous tense
  • Perfect tense
  • Perfect continuous tense

1. Simple Tense/Indefinite Tense: It is used to represent-

Present Tense- Ongoing routine

Past Tense- Activity that is over

Future Tense- Activity to happen in future

2. Continuous Tense: The activity is fragmented, consistent, or going on.

3. Perfect Tense: The activity is finished or completed regarding a specific purpose of time.

4. Perfect Continuous Tense: The activity is going on persistently throughout a period of time and is yet to be done.

Present Tense Rules

Rule: Subject + V1 + s/es + Object

Rule: Subject + V1 + Object

Example: Antonio speaks French.

Here the subject is Antonio (singular) and “s” has been added to the verb (speak), followed by the object (French)

Example: The boys speak French.

Here the subject is Boys (plural) and no changes have been made with V1 (first form of the verb) and the object

Rule: Subject + is/am/are + V1 + ing + object

Example: The writer is writing inspirational novels.

Here the subject is Writer, followed by “is”

The first form of the verb (V1) here is “write” and “ing” has been added to it, followed by the object “inspirational novels”

Rule: Subject + has + V3 + Object

Rule: Subject + have + V3 + Object

Example: He has shopped in the market.

Here, “He” is the subject + has

“shopped” is the third form of verb and market is the object

Example: We have shopped in this market.

Here, “We” is the subject + have

“shopped” is the third form of verb and market is the object

Here “She” is the subject + has been, followed by “ing” added to the first form of verb “practice” and then the object

Here “They” is the subject + have been, followed by “ing” added to the first form of verb “practice” and then the object

Past Tense Rules

For Example: James attended the program

Here, the subject is “James” and “attended” is the second form of the verb (V2) of “attend” followed by the object

Example: Manila was going for shopping in the market.

Here, the subject is “Manila” + was

It is followed by the first form of the verb (V1) “go” + “ing” and then the object “shopping”

Example: We were going shopping in the market.

Here, the subject is “We” + were

Rule: Subject + had + V3 + Object

For Example Samuel had studied in the library before he came to the class.

Here the subject is “Samuel” + had

Then “studied”, which is the third form of verb (V3) “study” is given followed by the object

Rule: Subject + had been + V1 + ing + Object

For Example I had been singing various kinds of songs for an hour.

Here the subject is “I” + had been

It is followed by “singing”, which is the first form of the verb (V1) of “sing” and then the object
