Difference between IELTS Academic & IELTS General Writing

Writing can be done through are various styles such as technical writing, general writing, informal writing, creative writing, academic writing and more which can be opted as per the exam requirement or the purpose of writing.

Academic writing refers to that style of writing which is used for research projects, essays, abstracts, conference papers, and more. This writing styles has its own set of rules and objectives. It is quite impersonal style of writing which is more organized and structural.

General Writing is used to write in daily routine articles. This writing style is used to write General papers and subjects which is quite personal types. General Writing is quite easy to understand and can be further divided into formal, informal and semi-formal.

Use for writing research exams, emphasizes a particular subject.

General writing is used to write upon general topics which readers find attractive.

The use of abbreviations is strictly not allowed in academic writing

Abbreviations are allowed in general writing.

Punctuation and Grammar rules in academic writing must be followed.

Correct grammar and spelling is important but not as strict as it is academic writing.

A formal style of writing is allowed in academic writing.

Language can be any of the three formal, semi-formal and informal.

Concise and objective writing format.

There is no precise format it depends upon the writer to entertain the readers.

IELTS Writing- Difference between IELTS General Writing VS IELTS Academic Writing

▶️ IELTS Academic Writing

IELTS Academic Writing is divided in two tasks-

Academic Writing in IELTS Task 1- Report Writing

Candidates will be provided with one of the following

  • Bars
  • Graphs
  • Pie charts
  • Tables
  • Diagrams
  • Maps
  • Process diagrams
  • Line and bar chart
  • Pie and bar chart

Candidates have to analyze the data from the given means and are asked to write a paragraph of 150 words. Students have to complete this task in 20 minutes.

Candidates have to write a report of 150 words from a given graph, table or chart. 20 minutes are given to the candidate.

Academic Writing in IELTS Task 2- Essay Writing

IELTS Academic writing is used to evaluate the capability of the candidate in understanding and responding in the same for the academic material of university and professional registrations around the globe.

To prepare for the IELTS writing exam it is suggested to read and observe the vocabulary, sentence formation, and grammar structure of academic material by going through-

  • Books
  • Journals
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers

Academic writing task 2 is an essay writing task. In this, a topic is provided to the candidate and he/she has to write an essay of 250 words. 40 minutes will be given to students to complete task 2. Make sure that tone should be formal as informal or semi-formal writing format is not allowed in IELTS academic writing. Marks will also be deducted for wrong spellings, incorrect grammar use, for using abbreviations and fillers in Academic writing.

▶️IELTS General Writing

IELTS General Writing is divided in two tasks-

IELTS General Writing task 1- Letter Writing

Unlike academic writing task 1, General writing task 1 is letter writing. Letter writing can be in any format formal, semi-formal or informal depending upon the title. Understanding the title is important for the right selection of format.

IELTS General Writing Task 2- Essay Writing

However, in both the exam types whether its IELTS Academic or IELTS General task 2 is the same i.e. Essay Writing. You will get 40 minutes to complete the task and the word limit is the same as in academic writing that is 250 words. Some slight differences are as follows-

The essay question of IELTS General Training Task 2 is quite easy than the IELTS Academic Training essay topic. General Writing essay topic is much easier to write as compared to IELTS academic writing.

Topic that is given in IELTS General Essay Writing is common in nature. It is picked up from everyday life topics including friends, family, entertainment, education and more. On the other hand, if we talk about academic writing then the given essay topics are more complex and require a formal tone in writing.

Marking Scheme of IELTS General & Academic Writing

The marking criteria is same in both the test based on the above-mentioned rules. IELTS Writing task 2 is given 66% of marks weightage which means it is very important to excel in this task. The scoring is divided in the following way-

Similar to the Reading test, the IELTS Writing test also takes 60 minutes. For the General Training Writing test, you need to write a letter (150 words) and a Short Essay (250 words). The Academic Writing test is usually a bit more formal. For the first task, you are asked to describe a table, chart, or diagram (150 words).
