It is not at all impossible to cover all the 40 questions in 60 minutes but it requires mindfully concentrated which has been gone through a lot of practice too. In this article, some of the tips and tricks for time management in reading tests will be given.

What are the Types of Questions asked in IELTS Reading (Academic and General Training)?

Students have to prepare for a variety of questions that are asked in the IELTS General reading or IELTS Academic reading exam such as:

  • Multiple choice
  • Identifying information
  • Identifying a writer's views/claims
  • Matching information
  • Matching headings
  • Matching features
  • Matching sentence endings
  • Sentence completion
  • Summary, note, table, flow-chart completion
  • Diagram label completion
  • Short-answer questions

For ensuring the completion of the IELTS reading exam, a candidate needs to answer a wide range of questions in just 60 minutes. You have to manage your time for getting desired band score in IELTS reading after completing your exam. Listed below are some valuable tips to ensure time management in the IELTS reading exam.

▶️ Allocation of time

So, it is known that we have 60 minutes for 40 questions or we can say that 60 minutes for three passages. So, do allot the time of 20 minutes for one passage only. Set your clocks by writing the minutes on the passage. It is strongly recommended that do not spend more than 20 minutes on one passage. It can also be said that we have 1 ½ minute for one question.

Practice for it by allocating say, 17 minutes for each passage and do the mock tests by allotting 18 to 19 minutes for each passage.

Q- What to do with the rest of the minutes?

A- Well, use that for rechecking or rereading.

▶️ Skim through the passage

Skimming means having a glance over the passage. It is almost wasteful to spend your time reading each and every sentence or word of the passage as it is not at all required to translate the language. You can quickly go through the passage to understand the gist of the main key matter. It will not only help you to understand the questions but also to find out the answers.

▶️ Do the easier type of questions first

In reading tests, five to eight types of questions are asked which usually include true/false/not given questions,  matching heading questions in IELTS reading, fill-ups or summary completion, Question answer types questions, etc.

It is usually known to the students which type of questions are they well in. So for better time management, it is suggested that have a glance at the type of the questions of the three passages, and whichever type Seems easier, do that type of questions first.

A. It will boost your confidence.

B. It will leave you with more minutes for another passage.

▶️ Write the answers on the answer sheet directly

Many students have the habit to write the answers on the question paper as they have the habit that they will transfer it later to the answer sheet. It is wrong and not the correct way in reading tests as reading tests will not give you extra transfer time for the answers, unlike listening tests. Write your answers as soon as you find your answers. Remember to take care of the grammar and spelling mistakes as well as one error will cost you one mark.

▶️ Do not waste your time on a single question

In finding the answers, students usually get engrossed in one passage only and try to find out each and every question of the single passage. It will be suggested that you should not waste time on a single question. If you are not able to find the answer to a particular question, shift from that because time is running.

▶️ Read the questions first

Another time management trick is to read the questions first in each of the passages.

 a. The logic behind it Is that, if you have read the questions, you will be able to spot the keywords from the passage earlier.

b. wherever you find any keyword of any question in the passage, you will be able to locate the answer for that as well.

c. It is not necessary to do the questions line-wise.

d. Instead, do it paragraph-wise and exhaust each and every paragraph fully.

▶️Some of the last minutes can be utilized for reading introductions and conclusions of the passages

Yes, the situation may come when you have answered the questions of two passages fully but you were left with the third one and some of the lesser minutes than allocation, it is suggested that you should focus on the introduction and conclusion of the passage. As the first lines and last lines of the paragraph have the gist and you will be able to locate mood answers from there possibly. Do not go for translating each and every line of the passage as earlier said.

▶️ Identify the keywords

Identification of the keywords is the only key in the reading test. Keywords are the main words around the question or about which the question is about. Do not forget about the keywords and whenever you read the questions, keep the keywords in your mind and locate that in the passage.

▶️ Spending initial two to three minutes reading the questions and knowing what they exactly want

Do not go fast. Go with the flow and the first step in solving any passage is reading the questions it is strongly suggested that you should not read the questions in hustle and bustle. Read each and every question with full concentration and learn about the demand of the question. It can be that any noun or pronoun is demanded or an adjective or any place or any Time period is demanded.

▶️ Answer every question

Make sure you answer every question asked in the IELTS reading exam, apart from the fact that you don’t know the answers to some questions. Remember, there is no negative marking for wrong answers in the IELTS reading exam but if your guess gets right you will definitely get marks for the same. However, you can make an educated guess for raising your correct answer chances.

▶️ Text Structure Matters

As you start reading the passage in the IELTS reading exam, make sure you get aware of the structure of the passage. There are two basic types of structures-

  • Descriptive (factual, chronological)
  • Discursive (theoretical, based on research and evidence)

Why it is important?

If you are completely aware of how IELTS text works, it will help you to predict answers and helps in finding the answers quickly. It also helps in making an educated guess for the answers you don’t know.

This is really an effective time management strategy.

Conclusion

A reading test is taken to check your reading skills and knowledge of the vocabulary of the English language. Do not get panic and do not go quick. Go with a calm mind and do a lot of practice beforehand. Practise is the only key to time management.
