Format Of the Test | Paper-Based Test Format | Computer-Based Test Format |
PTE is a complete computer-based test. In which candidates may need to select correct answers to the questions or may speak out the answers into their headsets. On the other hand, IELTS is a paper-based exam. Students can consider this factor, let’s say the candidate is having a slow typing speed then PTE may not work for him or he/she has to work on their typing. Or let’s suppose a candidate is having a doctor’s handwriting then clearing IELTS will be difficult for them. So, by keeping such facts in mind one can make the right choice.

Here rises a big question from both IELTS and PTE which test is easy to clear. Also, it is one of the most important questions that arise in the mind of the candidate before joining.
Well, the scoring criteria of both tests are fairly the same. But yes, there is a difference between the difficulty level modules of both tests. In my experience, students find the reading & writing section of IELTS a bit difficult, and on the other hand, the reading section of the PTE exam is a bit difficult to clear for many students. The reading section is difficult as students are not in the habit of reading daily.
The speaking section of IELTS is depended upon the confidence of the student and opinions that students can deliver to the examiner. On the other hand, a speaking section of PTE is based on the automated scoring system, if the student understood what the system is looking for then he/she can grab a better grade.
The listening section is equal in terms of difficulty.
On Basis | IELTS | PTE |
Assessment Mechanism | Manual | Automated |
The speaking section of PTE is done automatically by a computer program developed by Pearson. This means that there is no real person who is listening to your speaking or analyzing your writing.
On the other hand, the speaking exam of IELTS is conducted by a specialized examiner. The candidate needs to interact with them face to face and the same for your writing exam, in which an examiner will read your writing task and give you a grade.
Both PTE & IELTS exam has a fairly accurate assessment system. But if the candidate will ask for a better option then it would be IELTS as a candidate would feel more comfortable talking with a person rather than a computer. On the other hand if your think in a different way then PTE is free from any kind of biased scoring as it is checked by an automated system developed by Pearson.
We have outlined the major and most important factors that are to be considered before choosing your exam. Every candidate may have different preferences based on their requirements.
