IELTS Writing- Concession Paragraph In Task 2

IELTS test is a well-recognized test at a worldly platform to judge proficiency in the English language. It judges the abilities of reading, listening, speaking, and writing the English language.

Today, in this article, the focus is on IELTS writing task 2 where an opinion paragraph is inserted known as a concession paragraph. A detailed view of concession in IELTS writing will be represented here along with some examples in different types of essays.

What is Concession?

A dictionary meaning of concession is “something that you agree to do in order to end an argument”. Concession is when you have your own opinion in which you believe and you support but the other’s opinion can’t be neglected as well. You concede that the other’s opinion to the argument is also valid and give the proper reasons for that too. It can be called a partial agreement to the statement.

For Example

People opine that capital punishment is wrong, but they admit that some extreme crimes, such as genocide, might warrant its use. This is their “concession.”

In an academic essay, a student is expected to show his/her ability to think logically and critically. Even when one is not required to show balance, it is a sign of intelligence that one can acknowledge opposing ideas and arguments. Therefore, concessions are quite useful. Writing a concession paragraph can be vital if you are targeting Band 7, 8, or 9, because it shows you can think of and write complex ideas in English.

What is a Concession Paragraph?

Basically, a concession paragraph is that paragraph in which you write that viewpoint that you do not really support. It is basically a paragraph of other people’s opinions but not yours.

In IELTS essay writing, especially in an opinion essay or an agree/disagree type of essay, two statements are given where you are asked to write about your own opinion. So, you are expected to write about both sides of the issue and that is a concession.

● Concessions show a depth of thought. It tells the examiner that a writer is a mature thinker by conveying more complex ideas than a straightforward essay with no concessions.

● Remember that the reasons or valid points of the concession paragraph should not match with the ideas written in your own opinion paragraph because both the statements on the issue are opposite.

● Concession is when you say that the other side has a point and the justification should be contrary to your own opinion.

Tips for Including a Concession Paragraph

● Do not forget to clear your side first in the introduction paragraph.

● Before writing a concession paragraph, do not forget to mention the connectors that the other view is....... or the reasons to support the other view are.......

● And in your opinion side paragraph, a connector can be..... However, my viewpoint is this.........

● In the case of a one-statement essay, a concession can be made by writing an opposite view as every statement always has a contradiction.

● Do not forget to mention the reason in support of your view at the end of the concession paragraph as it makes your thesis stronger.

So after reading the above tips, we have reached a format of writing an opinionated essay, that is,

Ist paragraph – introduction (including a thesis statement)

2nd paragraph- reasons in support of your own view

3rd paragraph- reasons in support of the opposite view but not yours, but again contradicting it with your view.

Last paragraph- conclusion (clearing and supporting your view again)

However, by clever usage of lexical resources the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs can be written opposite to their format.

To write a concession paragraph, this structure can be used:

Other’s opinion + reason (+ example) + your opinion + reason + example/detail

Where the Paragraph of Concession should be Situated in the Essay?

In most essays, it is essential to write a concession as per the above format, that is as the 3rd paragraph. It makes the reader convinced about your viewpoint beforehand in the 2nd paragraph. Or if you are preparing to write 5 paragraphs, it is best just before the last paragraph.

Well, in some cases choose to write a concession paragraph immediately after introducing your topic. Do it in the cases if you think your reasons against your views are more convincing for the reader or the reader will hold the same point.

IELTS Essay Example 1

Students should continue their studies in universities or do some paid work immediately after senior secondary education. Clear your opinion.

Here, a concession paragraph can be added but that doesn't mean that you will support both hands. You should be in one place. However, a paragraph of another viewpoint can be added and that is known as the concession paragraph.

Suppose

Your viewpoint supports that a person should immediately start doing paid work after his/her senior secondary education.

● Inflation is at its peak so in order to satisfy the financial needs, paid work should be done.

● Self-confidence boosts as you get to know working in the real-life field.

But on the other hand, you believe that the reader may support higher education's viewpoint. So it's better to include a concession paragraph as the 2nd paragraph.

IELTS Essay Example 2

A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material possessions. Old fashioned values such as honor, kindness, and trust no longer seem important. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Step 1: understand the two statements

● People are respected for their social status and material possessions.

● Past possessions such as honor, kindness and trust are not important.

Step 2: decide your thesis

Suppose you are in agreement. One can pretty much agree that social status and material possessions are important and we are judged by them often whether we like it or not.

Step 3: deciding the structure of an essay

Ist paragraph introduction- thesis statement- I agree with the notion that wealthy people having a name in society are more respected.

2nd paragraph- what was the trend in the past?

People preferred to do kindful acts and they used to trust each other. They had warmth in their hearts. They used to get contention in what they had.

3rd paragraph- why do you agree that the situation is the same as said.

In the era of competition and there is a race to achieve more. No satiety. More usage of Mobile Phones and trends get highlighted in videos by having the latest materialistic possessions.

Also, nowadays, children don't even respect their parents or elders and how they would be supposed to respect other honorable people in society.

4th paragraph- conclusion- no doubt, that kind and trusted people were valued more but these traditional values are no longer helpful in progressing in the present.

Here in the above essay, the 2nd paragraph is a paragraph of concession.

IELTS Essay Example 3

The most important consideration when choosing any career or job is having a high income. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Step 1: first statement- money is the most important.

Second statement- other factors should be considered

Step 2: deciding the paragraphs

Introduction- thesis- income can be important but it should not be the only thing. I partially agree.

Ist paragraph- how income is important.

2nd paragraph- which other factors are important other than an income factor. (Concession paragraph)

Conclusion- repeat your thesis statement.

Step 3: writing an essay

Answer

In this era, when inflation is at its peak and people are striving to manage their expenses, salary is certainly the first thing that comes to mind before finding a new job. It is, in many ways, the ultimate need or consideration for a job but in my opinion, it should not be the only most important consideration to be thought of. This essay will argue the same further.

To initiate with the reasons in support of the income factor, probably, money makes one's modern societies tick. Having higher salaries, results in more savings and one can have their own homes or cars etcetera. Money will be able to make one's life smoother by managing daily household expenses which a common man is expected to carry. Also, a higher salary will be beneficial as our contributions towards the societal funds will rise in terms of taxes or donations. All these factors are enough to convince everyone that income should be the most vital consideration in a new job.

However, this is not the whole case. In this race of having more and more money, people are losing themselves in terms of exhaustion, stress, or depression. They tend to do more hours of work and as a result, they are left with less time for themselves and their families. Another point which can be highlighted here is that, in a job, many other factors play an equally vital role as income. These can be recognized in your position and growth in terms of promotion etc. There may be chances that a job where you get a higher income is a job where no one respects you and your boss gives you more of the work which is not even required.

In conclusion, although money is undoubtedly important and can bring many benefits to one's life, it probably should not be the only consideration in finding a new job.

IELTS Essay Example 4

In recent times, multinational companies and their products are becoming more ubiquitous around the world, even in developing countries. Advocates of globalization claim that this only brings benefits to developing countries. To what extent do you agree?

Agree (benefits)

● develops the economy, more money flow in the economy.

● create more jobs for people in domestic countries.

● makes international brand names available in the domestic market which are known as chain brands. For example Domino's Pizza, Gucci, Hyundai, Samsung etcetera.

● makes tourists feel comfortable as they can buy their used products in foreign countries too.

DISAGREE (loss to economy)

● can hurt local companies as people will tend to use more of the branded and multinational products.

● Some people lose jobs because of lack of knowledge and more competition.

● gives more benefits to the foreign company than the local country.

● reduces cultural diversity and affects the local culture as it aids in developing foreign culture.

Step 1: Decide your thesis- In this era of globalization, in my opinion there are more benefits than demerits of multinational companies doing business in different countries.

Step 2: Deciding about the structure

Ist paragraph- convince that there are more benefits and explain the agreed part.

2nd paragraph- use lexical resources- such as although, however, admittedly.

Say that it has been admittedly reported that benefits are more yet, there are some losses to the local economy. And that is what makes your concession paragraph.

Last one is a conclusion which again will explain your agreement part but not explain any point here.

So it is all about making a concession. Hope that you liked this article and it gives you knowledge about another area of an IELTS essay (academic and general writing). IELTS writing is one of the scoring modules and keep practicing for it daily to achieve your desired score.
